From Florida’s First Theme Park to Global Fame

Founded by Dick and Julie Pope, the Cypress Gardens opened in 1939 as the state’s first commercial theme park. It quickly became known as the “Showplace of the South,” attracting millions with its stunning scenery and groundbreaking water ski shows. The park appeared in over 50 films and TV shows and helped establish Florida’s Cypress Gardens as a world-renowned destination and family escape.

Preservation Through the Years

In 2004, Cypress Gardens was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its cultural and botanical significance. Although the original Cypress Gardens Florida theme park closed in 2009, its iconic garden was carefully preserved. In 2011, it was thoughtfully restored and reopened as part of LEGOLAND® Florida Resort, ensuring this historic botanical garden near Orlando continues to inspire new generations.
