Los Angeles to Carlsbad: What to Expect on the Road
The drive from LA to LEGOLAND® California Resort in Carlsbad is approximately 85 to 100 miles, depending on your starting point and traffic. The trip will take you about two hours, depending on how often you stop.
Travel time might increase due to LA traffic, which can be quite unpredictable. Expect congestion when leaving the city, especially near Downtown, the 405 interchange and major coastal exits.
Choosing the Best LA to Carlsbad Route for Your Family
When traveling from LA to Carlsbad, the I-5 South is the most direct route. It stays inland for most of the journey, and you can enjoy some ocean views from San Clemente to Carlsbad, especially as you get closer to LEGOLAND® California Resort. If you want to hit the ground running and get to LEGOLAND® quickly, this is your best option!
If you want a more scenic, slower route, then the 1, also known as the Pacific Coast Highway, to I-5 is a popular choice. You get greater ocean views and the opportunity to stop off at the beach for a quick swim before getting to the Resort.
When to Leave Los Angeles for the Smoothest Trip to LEGOLAND® California Resort
Timing is everything when driving from LA to Carlsbad, especially if you want to visit some of our most popular rides and attractions first thing in the day.
During the week, you can expect rush hour to be between 7AM to 10AM and 4PM to 7PM. Leaving before 7AM or between 10AM and 2PM usually ensures the smoothest ride. On the weekends, traffic typically becomes heavy between 1PM and 4PM.
If you're heading to LEGOLAND® California Resort on a weekend, leaving early in the morning is the best way to avoid delays and make the most of your time at the Resort.
Tip: Check traffic conditions before you start your trip to Carlsbad in case you need to change your route.
